Activated carbon is highly effective and widely used for air filtration, water purification, poison control, and odor removal.
Activated carbon, or active carbon, is carbon that has been processed to have an extremely high surface area to trap contaminants. In fact, a teaspoon of activated carbon has the surface area of a football field! There simply is no other material with the filtering performance characteristics of active carbon.
Chemical pollutants – the gases and vapors in the air – are so small (.01 microns and smaller) that particle filters are unable to remove them. The carcinogen Benzene, for example, is found in outdoor and indoor air pollution and tobacco smoke, and is .0006 microns in size. Activated carbon removes benzene and other toxic chemicals that particulate filters cannot.
Skotti uses 100% activated carbon cloth (ACC) mask filters, which are superior to other carbon filter technologies, such as “embedded” carbon. The incredible surface area, combined with electrostatic forces within the filter, enable Skotti masks to be highly efficient at adsorbing pollutants. The filters are also naturally antimicrobial and antiviral, without the addition of chemical treatments.
